Walking across Toronto - Bay Street

Bay Street is well known as a synonym for Toronto's Financial District, but it contains a bit more than that! It's not very long and on this walk I started at Lake Ontario and walked north to where it ends as it joins into Davenport Avenue.

Click on any picture to see a big version! Also part of this map.

The bottom of Bay Street (looking SE). Lake Ontario to the right of the Westin.

Looking north on Bay from Harbour Street. Just left of the picture (OK, not in the picture but interesting enough and close enough to mention) is the Toronto Harbour Commissioners Building (now at least 1/4 mile away from the lake, but formerly right at the shoreline!). Sharp eyes will see the Royal York Hotel 'dominating' the skyline left-centre in this picture.

The Gardiner Expressway supports look to be in good shape.

Scotiabank Arena - just north of the Gardiner, west of Bay.

Always room for one more picture of the Royal Bank building at Front St. Beautiful gold colour not really noticeable in this picture (and see also my Front Street walk for another picture).

Scotiabank Building (with the new Scotiabank Tower - Scotia Plaza - in the background clad in 'Napoleon Red' granite).

The National Club. I'm not a member 😀 "...a private club founded in 1874 for business professionals located in the Financial District of Downtown Toronto" according to their website. They built this building in 1907.

Canada Permanent Building (built in 1931; SW corner of Bay and Adelaide).

There's a 'Northern Ontario Building' in Toronto

A more recent look north up Bay to Queen Street and old city hall from Richmond Street

New City Hall (as seen on Star Trek: The Next Generation!) and as my brother Mike noted, City Hall also appeared in the movie Resident Evil: Apocalyse
(https://toronto.citynews.ca/2015/09/13/toronto-on-film-5-iconic-scenes-shot-at-city-hall/) where the main character (Milla Jovovich, though probably a stunt performer) rappelled down in Australian style, facing the ground and running.

The old Toronto Coach (bus) Terminal

This brick building used to be a seedy hotel (https://tayloronhistory.com/2013/12/12/torontos-architectural-gemsthe-former-hotel-at-bay-and-elm-streets/) and was going to be restored as a boutique hotel, but now will be part of condos.

Looking north on Bay at Wellesley. A little further up on the right was the Sutton Place Hotel (now condos) which was a big place for the stars to stay during TIFF. Also a well-known restaurant - Bistro 990 - across the street from it.

The Sutton Place Hotel entrance (pic from FaceBook).

Large donkey with leg warmers - but it was a beautiful day! Maybe it's stuck in a time warp with 1980's exercise videos.

Expensive restaurant 'Eataly' at Bay and Bloor.

Looking north on Bay just north of Bloor. Bay TTC station at left.

The end of Bay Street (at Davenport) - looking NE.

And just east of Bay on Davenport on the south side - The Stone Church. An interesting looking building and it turns out that the site used to be Jesse Ketchum Hall. Constructed in 1848, the hall was torn down in 1986 to make way for the church.

  2. Also: City Hall also appeared in the first Resident Evil movie, the main character (Milla Jovovich, though probably a stunt performer) rappelled down in Australian style, facing the ground and running.
